It’s been a long winter, y’all. Cody slot car races in the off season so he’s not usually as antsy as I am to get back to big cars and he was even talking about how ready he was to go racing again. So that’s why we are driving 2 hours and 45 minutes southeast to start our season on March 1st, when the temperature is only supposed to reach about 57 degrees today. For those who don’t know me, I absolutely hate the cold, and in my opinion anything below 70 degrees is cold. 😂 It’s 21 degrees this morning as we hit the road…
I’ll get over whining about the weather because we are going to one of my favorite little local racetracks; Shadyside Dragway. Shadyside is a family owned and operated track in Shelby, North Carolina and is about an hour away from my hometown. My family has raced there for years and we know two things for certain; we always have a great time and the fried bologna and cheese sandwiches are delicious. So next time you’re in the area, check out the Buff family at Shadyside Dragway!
This weekend is a two day Footbrake only event with a $20 gate entry fee to race for $2,000 and $4,000 respectively. Cody will be in the black Firebird, I’ll be racing my Fireturd, and Dad will be bringing up the black Buick to race. Hopefully we will be able to put something together and get a win to start the season. We didn’t come to the Saturday portion of the race due to cold temperatures (we had snow at the house), but I heard they had a great crowd! Jim Wood from South Carolina took the win over one of our local friends, Jake Ball, from Johnson City, Tennessee.
It’s time for first round here for the Sunday race with 107 entries today! We are feeling pretty good, the Fireturd made two nice laps, so did the Buick, and Cody picked up the dash for cash win with an .01 package which gave him the bye run first round. I won the first round as my opponent went red, but Dad went red to lose. Second round, I won with an .018 reaction time, Cody lost, and Dad won with an .01 light. They had second round buybacks which makes it to where all three of us are going into third round.
Third round is where the race day ends for our little group. Cody and Dad both had breakout runs, and I had a red light. Obviously this isn’t how we wanted the day to go, but the cars were running pretty consistent, nothing was broken, we had a good time, and got to see some of our racing family. Now it’s time for the ride home but we are already looking forward to the next race!
We made it back to our house and have gotten word of the results from today’s 4K race. Another local Tennessee friend, Rodney Finchum, picked up tonight’s win over Brent Hyatt from North Carolina. The lone semi finalist was a good friend of ours, Billy Norris, from Taylors, South Carolina. Billy had a rough start to the weekend with his race car breaking Saturday, but he was able to beat most of the competition today in his tow vehicle! Great job everyone!!
